{"id":1771,"date":"2023-02-07T07:23:32","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T07:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.amt.in\/?p=1771"},"modified":"2023-02-07T07:23:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T07:23:32","slug":"insights-on-jitsi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.amt.in\/index.php\/2023\/02\/07\/insights-on-jitsi\/","title":{"rendered":"Insights on Jitsi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jitsi\u00c2\u00a0is a collection of\u00c2\u00a0free and opensource\u00c2\u00a0multiplatform\u00c2\u00a0voice\u00c2\u00a0(VoIP),\u00c2\u00a0videoconferencing\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0instant messaging\u00c2\u00a0applications for the web platform, Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android.\u00c2\u00a0The Jitsi project began with the Jitsi Desktop (previously known as\u00c2\u00a0SIP\u00c2\u00a0Communicator). With the growth of\u00c2\u00a0WebRTC, the project team focus shifted to the Jitsi Video Bridge for allowing web-based multi-party video calling. Later the team added Jitsi Meet, a full video conferencing application that includes web, Android, and iOS clients. Jitsi also operates meet.jit.si, a version of Jitsi Meet hosted by Jitsi for free community use. Other projects include: Jigasi, lib-jitsi-meet, Jidesha, and Jitsi.<\/p>\n<p>Jitsi has received support from various institutions such as the\u00c2\u00a0NLnet\u00c2\u00a0Foundation,\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0University of Strasbourg\u00c2\u00a0and the Region of Alsace\u00c2\u00a0and it has also had multiple participations in the\u00c2\u00a0Google Summer of Code\u00c2\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>The Jitsi open source repository on\u00c2\u00a0GitHub\u00c2\u00a0currently contains 103 repositories. The major projects include:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>Jitsi Meet<\/dt>\n<dd>Video conferencing server designed for quick installation on Debian\/Ubuntu servers.<\/dd>\n<dt>Jitsi Videobridge<\/dt>\n<dd>WebRTC Selective Forwarding Unit engine for powering multi-party conferences.<\/dd>\n<dt>Jigasi<\/dt>\n<dd>Server-side application that links allows regular SIP clients to join Jitsi Meet conferences hosted by Jitsi Videobridge.<\/dd>\n<dt>lib-jitsi-meet<\/dt>\n<dd>Low-level JavaScript API for providing a customized UI for Jitsi Meet.<\/dd>\n<dt>Jidesha<\/dt>\n<dd>Chrome extension for Jitsi Meet.<\/dd>\n<dt>Jitsi<\/dt>\n<dd>Audio, video, and chat communicator that supports protocols such as SIP, XMPP\/Jabber, AIM\/ICQ, and IRC.<\/dd>\n<dd><span id=\"Jitsi_Meet\" class=\"mw-headline\">Jitsi Meet:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is an open source JavaScript WebRTC application and can be used for videoconferencing. One can share desktop and presentations and with just a link can invite new members for videoconference. It can be used by downloading the app or directly in a browser and it is compatible with any recent browser.\u00c2\u00a0Every user can use Jitsi.org servers or can download and install the server software on a Linux-based machine.<\/p>\n<p>Key Features of Jitsi Meet<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encrypted communication (secure communication): As of April 2020, 1-1 calls use the P2P mode, which is\u00c2\u00a0end-to-end encrypted\u00c2\u00a0via\u00c2\u00a0DTLS-SRTP\u00c2\u00a0between the two participants.\u00c2\u00a0Group calls also use DTLS-SRTP encryption, but rely on the Jitsi Videobridge (JVB) as video router, where packets are decrypted temporarily.\u00c2\u00a0The Jitsi team emphasizes that &#8220;they are never stored to any persistent storage and only live in memory while being routed to other participants in the meeting&#8221;, and that this measure is necessary due to current limitations of the underlying\u00c2\u00a0WebRTC\u00c2\u00a0technology.<\/li>\n<li>No need of new\u00c2\u00a0client software\u00c2\u00a0installation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p><span id=\"Jitsi_Videobridge\" class=\"mw-headline\">Jitsi Videobridge:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is a video conferencing solution supporting WebRTC that allows multiuser video communication. It is a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) and only forwards the selected streams to other participating users in the video conference call, therefore, CPU horsepower is not that critical for performance.<\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"Jitsi_Desktop\" class=\"mw-headline\">Jitsi Desktop:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Jitsi spawned some sister projects such as the Jitsi Video Bridge Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) and Jitsi Meet, a video and web conferencing application. To prevent misunderstanding due to the increasing popularity of these other Jitsi projects, the Jitsi client application was rebranded as\u00c2\u00a0Jitsi Desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Originally the project was mostly used as an experimentation tool because of its support for\u00c2\u00a0IPv6.\u00c2\u00a0Through the years, as the project gathered members, it also added support for protocols other than\u00c2\u00a0SIP.<\/p>\n<p>Features:<\/p>\n<p>Jitsi supports multiple\u00c2\u00a0operating systems, including\u00c2\u00a0Windows\u00c2\u00a0as well as\u00c2\u00a0Unix-like\u00c2\u00a0systems such as Linux,\u00c2\u00a0Mac OS X\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0BSD.
