Siri\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0is a\u00c2\u00a0virtual assistant\u00c2\u00a0part of\u00c2\u00a0Apple Inc.’s\u00c2\u00a0iOS,\u00c2\u00a0watchOS,\u00c2\u00a0macOS, and\u00c2\u00a0tvOS\u00c2\u00a0operating systems. The assistant uses voice queries and a\u00c2\u00a0natural-language user interface\u00c2\u00a0to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Internet services. The software adapts to users’ individual language usages, searches, and preferences, with continuing use. Returned results are individualized.<\/p>\n
Siri is a spin-off from a project originally developed by the\u00c2\u00a0SRI International\u00c2\u00a0Artificial Intelligence Center. Its\u00c2\u00a0speech recognition\u00c2\u00a0engine was provided by\u00c2\u00a0Nuance Communications, and Siri uses advanced\u00c2\u00a0machine learning\u00c2\u00a0technologies to function. Its original American, British, and Australian voice actors recorded their respective voices around 2005, unaware of the recordings’ eventual usage in Siri. The voice assistant was released as an app for iOS in February 2010, and it was acquired by Apple two months later. Siri was then integrated into\u00c2\u00a0iPhone 4S\u00c2\u00a0at its release in October 2011. At that time, the separate app was also removed from the iOS\u00c2\u00a0App Store. Siri has become an integral part of Apple’s products, having been adapted into other hardware devices over the years, including newer\u00c2\u00a0iPhone\u00c2\u00a0models, as well as\u00c2\u00a0iPad,\u00c2\u00a0iPod Touch,\u00c2\u00a0Mac,\u00c2\u00a0AirPods,\u00c2\u00a0Apple TV\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0HomePod.<\/p>\n
Siri supports a wide range of user commands, including performing phone actions, checking basic information, scheduling events and reminders, handling device settings, searching the Internet, navigating areas, finding information on entertainment, and is able to engage with iOS-integrated apps. With the release of\u00c2\u00a0iOS 10\u00c2\u00a0in 2016, Apple opened up limited third-party access to Siri, including third-party messaging apps, as well as payments, ride-sharing, and Internet calling apps. With the release of\u00c2\u00a0iOS 11, Apple has updated Siri’s voices for more clear, human voices, supports follow-up questions and language translation, and additional third-party actions.<\/p>\n
In February 2010, Siri was first made available as a standalone software for the iOS platform. At the time, the developers also planned to make Siri available for Android and BlackBerry handsets. Siri was purchased by Apple two months later. Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S with a beta version of Siri on October 4, 2011. Apple deleted the pre-existing standalone Siri app from the App Store following the announcement. Despite supporting iPhone 4, Tech-crunch said that the removal of the Siri app from the App Store may have had a financial benefit for the corporation by encouraging users to upgrade their smartphones. Steven Troughton-Smith, a third-party developer, was able to migrate Siri to the iPhone 4, however he was unable to connect to Apple’s servers.\u00c2\u00a0A few days later, Troughton-Smith, working with an anonymous person nicknamed “Chpwn”, managed to fully hack Siri, enabling its full functionalities on iPhone 4 and\u00c2\u00a0iPod Touch\u00c2\u00a0devices.\u00c2\u00a0Additionally, developers were also able to successfully create and distribute legal ports of Siri to any device capable of running\u00c2\u00a0iOS 5, though a\u00c2\u00a0proxy server\u00c2\u00a0was required for Apple server interaction.<\/p>\n
Over the years, Apple has expanded the line of officially supported products, including newer iPhone models,\u00c2\u00a0as well as\u00c2\u00a0iPad\u00c2\u00a0support in June 2012,\u00c2\u00a0iPod Touch support in September 2012,\u00c2\u00a0Apple TV\u00c2\u00a0support, and the standalone\u00c2\u00a0Siri Remote, in September 2015,\u00c2\u00a0Mac\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0AirPods\u00c2\u00a0support in September 2016,\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0HomePod\u00c2\u00a0support in February 2018.<\/p>\n
