Android 11\u00c2\u00a0is the upcoming\u00c2\u00a0eleventh major release\u00c2\u00a0and the 18th version of the\u00c2\u00a0Android\u00c2\u00a0mobile operating system, due for release in Q3 2020.\u00c2\u00a0Alphabetical release names for major Android versions were discontinued as of\u00c2\u00a0Android 10; therefore the OS was immediately branded as “Android 11”. The logo for the release features a dial\u00c2\u00a0turned to 11\u00e2\u20ac\u201d a reference to the music\u00c2\u00a0mockumentary\u00c2\u00a0film\u00c2\u00a0This Is Spinal Tap.<\/p>\n
A\u00c2\u00a0mobile operating system\u00c2\u00a0is an operating system for\u00c2\u00a0mobile phones,\u00c2\u00a0tablets,\u00c2\u00a0smartwatches,\u00c2\u00a02-in-1 PCs\u00c2\u00a0(that can be convert to a laptop mode or detach and work as a tablet mode) or other\u00c2\u00a0mobile devices. While computers such as typical\u00c2\u00a0laptops\u00c2\u00a0are ‘mobile’, the operating systems usually used on them are not considered mobile ones, as they were originally designed for\u00c2\u00a0desktop computers\u00c2\u00a0that historically did not have or need specific\u00c2\u00a0mobile\u00c2\u00a0features. This distinction is becoming blurred in some newer operating systems that are hybrids made for both uses.<\/p>\n
Mobile operating systems combine features of a\u00c2\u00a0personal computer\u00c2\u00a0operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use,and usually including a wireless inbuilt modem and\u00c2\u00a0SIM\u00c2\u00a0tray for telephony and data connection. By Q1 2018, over 383 million smartphones were sold with 86.2 percent running\u00c2\u00a0Android\u00c2\u00a0and 12.9 percent running\u00c2\u00a0iOS.\u00c2\u00a0Android\u00c2\u00a0alone is more popular than the popular desktop operating system\u00c2\u00a0Microsoft Windows, and in general smartphone use (even without tablets) outnumbers desktop use.<\/p>\n
Mobile devices with mobile communications abilities (e.g.,\u00c2\u00a0smartphones) contain two mobile operating systems\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u201c the main user-facing software platform is supplemented by a second low-level proprietary real-time operating system which operates the radio and other hardware. Research has shown that these low-level systems may contain a range of security vulnerabilities permitting malicious base stations to gain high levels of control over the mobile device.<\/p>\n
Mobile operating systems have majority use since 2017 (measured by web use); with even only the smartphones running them (excluding tablets) more used than any other kind of device.\u00c2\u00a0Thus traditional desktop OS is now a minority used kind of OS; see\u00c2\u00a0usage share of operating systems. However, variations occur in popularity by regions, while desktop-minority also applies on some days in regions such as United States and United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
The first developer preview build of Android 11 was released on February 19, 2020, as a factory image for supported\u00c2\u00a0Google Pixel\u00c2\u00a0smartphones (excluding the\u00c2\u00a0first-generation Pixel and Pixel XL). It was intended for three monthly developer preview builds to be released before the first beta release, initially due in May, with a total of three monthly beta releases before the actual release. The release of the public beta was originally scheduled to take place on June 3 at\u00c2\u00a0Google I\/O, which was ultimately cancelled due to the\u00c2\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic, so an online release event is currently planned instead.\u00c2\u00a0A state of “platform stability” is planned for June 2020, and the final release is expected to occur in the third quarter of 2020.\u00c2\u00a0Developer Preview 2 was then released on March 18,\u00c2\u00a0followed by Developer Preview 3 on April 23.\u00c2\u00a0On May 6, Google released an unexpected Developer Preview 4, as they pushed the whole roadmap for Android 11 forward a month, setting the date for the first beta for June 3.<\/p>\n
Then on May 29, Google announced that the beta launch would be delayed due to\u00c2\u00a0nationwide civil unrest\u00c2\u00a0spurred by the\u00c2\u00a0death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n
The first Beta was ultimately released on June 10, 2020.<\/p>\n
New platform features included in\u00c2\u00a0Android 11\u00c2\u00a0include enhancements to support for\u00c2\u00a0foldable smartphones\u00c2\u00a0(including support for hinge angle sensors), identification of standalone\u00c2\u00a05G NR\u00c2\u00a0networks, Project Mainline (servicing of system components via\u00c2\u00a0Google Play Store), and\u00c2\u00a0High Efficiency Image File Format\u00c2\u00a0(HEIF). Support for\u00c2\u00a0STIR\/SHAKEN\u00c2\u00a0call authentication will also be included. Google also stated plans for a “dedicated conversation section in the notification shade”, the ability to only grant certain permissions to apps on a case-by-case basis (similarly to\u00c2\u00a0iOS 13<\/a>), and to introduce stronger enforcement of the “scoped storage” system.\u00c2\u00a0If automatically rebooting after a system update, apps can automatically resume and regain access to credential-encrypted storage without authentication.<\/p>\n High Efficiency Image File Format\u00c2\u00a0(HEIF) is a\u00c2\u00a0container format\u00c2\u00a0for individual images and image sequences. It was developed by the\u00c2\u00a0Moving Picture Experts Group\u00c2\u00a0(MPEG) and is defined as Part 12 within the\u00c2\u00a0MPEG-H\u00c2\u00a0media suite (ISO\/IEC 23008-12). MPEG claims that a HEIF image using HEVC requires about half the storage space as the equivalent quality\u00c2\u00a0JPEG. HEIF also supports\u00c2\u00a0animation, and is capable of storing more information than an\u00c2\u00a0animated GIF\u00c2\u00a0or\u00c2\u00a0APNG\u00c2\u00a0at a small fraction of the size.<\/p>\n Android 11 comes with a new “recent apps” UI and the ability to undo an inadvertent closing of a recent app, as well as the ability to tweak gesture sensitivity.\u00c2\u00a0Ethernet tethering is supported when the device is connected to a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.<\/p>\n The above is a brief about Android 11.
